While Reiki maybe new to you, it has been used for centuries. Reiki is a Japanese word loosely translated as “universal life energy.” “Rei” translates to “higher power” and “Ki” translates to “life for energy.” Reiki is an Eastern form of complementary natural, noninvasive medicine which facilitates the body’s natural healing ability and strengthens a client’s energy system. A trained Reiki practitioner can help move the natural flow of life force, also known as “Qi” or “Chi,” simply by lightly laying one’s hands on or above certain areas of the body. Reiki impacts the whole body, emotions, mind, and spirit. This type of energy helping promotes healing, well-being, deep relaxation, and peace on multiple levels.
Each person has seven energy centers, also known as chakras (see my blog on Chakras for more information) where our energy pools and optimally, flows to the next chakra. Our energy centers sometimes get blocked or off center; Reiki clears those blockages, allowing for healing, both physical and spiritual. You will be fully clothed for your session, so be sure to wear comfortable clothing.
When our energy centers become blocked, both spiritual and physical disease can result. Eastern practitioners have known this for centuries, incorporating acupuncture, Reiki, meditation and other forms of energy movement into their healing practices. Even Western medicine has finally started to accept that treating just the physical body is treating only a portion of the problem. The University of Kentucky’s lauded Markey Cancer Center has incorporated these types of energy and sound therapies into their new “Integrative Medicine and Health program which focuses on the interaction of the mind, body, and spirit to treat the whole person.”
Other signs that energy healing has become more mainstream is modern medicine’s acceptance of the existence of energy for diagnostic purposes and treatment. We already have technology that measures the bioelectrical fields around the heart, the muscles, and the brain - the electrocardiogram, the electromyogram, and the electroencephalogram. Doctors also now use some forms of energy to alleviate pain, break up scar tissue through static magnets and treat depression through infrared light pulses. Energy healers are interacting with that same energy field that has been measured and well-documented by Western medicine.
Physicists have been studying energy waves for well over a century but for centuries before this, the Chinese understood that everything - EVERY SINGLE THING - has energy - a vibration coursing through it. This force runs through all of creation and when blocked within our bodies, our bodies do not run as they should. While there are many methods to unblock this energy in order to facilitate healing, Reiki is just one such method.
